Can anyone give me a for sure name on these ducks. I have heard every thing from Mottled X Mallard to Mottled X Black duck. I look at the colors on the wing speculum and for the black spot on the gape of the bill. The black spot at the gape of the bill is a dead give away for the Mottled duck so I have been told? So if this is true then all these are Mottled X birds right?

Well, the duck with the white stripes on the top and bottom would be mallard, or cross bred. The one with no stripes would be mottled. Hard to tell without seeing them up close. We don't get a lot of black ducks here. There are a few, but not many.

From what I gather, the one with two white stripes is a hybrid, the ones with one small white stripe or no white stripes at all are true mottleds. I asked the biologist at Goodwin a few weeks back and that's how he said he identified them, but he said even that is not enough sometimes to accuratley Id them, so who knows?

i would say the duck with the white on the top and bottom of the wing is a Mallard/Mottled Mix, And the birds with the White on just the bottom would be Mottled.

Its really hard these days to identify what kind of mix these Big puddle ducks have in them rather it be 50/50, 25/75, mallard/mottled.

I also noticed reading all the reports on here this past season, that Since ive hunted in florida starting back in '02, this year by far has had the most "hybrid ducks" taken.

The black spot at the gape of the bill and the color pattern of the speculum.

best answer..Hybrid

The state( R Bielefeld) is still studying the Mottled and the hybridization issue.
A double bar(above and below speculum) is one indicator. You will get some with the actual green on the head..or a black rump with tail curls.
