I just had some relatives come back from hunters safety course and they told me that a LEO who visited the class told them among other things that it was not legal to plug a shotgun with a pencil because it was too easy to take out and then put back in when you see an officer coming. I read the regs and it says that the plug must be one piece and can not be removable without disassembling the gun. I assumed removing the barrel counted as dis-assembly but apparently not? I don't mind putting a more permanent plug in but I'm not sure how to do it with a Mossberg. The factory plug is a straight dowel with two o-rings on it. It slides out just like a pencil. Has anyone come across this issue. IP: Logged |

Nope, my plug is a piece of metal dowel with a big washer thing welded to it. You can take the barrel/mag cap off and take it out without taking the gun apart. That is the way the factory made it. IP: Logged |

Now I dont know how accurate that is.. maybe if the inner cap of your magazine tube had a hole that a pencil could fit through, perhaps....BUUUUTTTT The regs say exactly what you stated...one piece and requiring disassembly of your gun to remove it... Id think that removing your magazine cap and barrel, plus the inner cap if there is one, would constitute disassembly... Ive been checked lots of times and all they do is see if they can fit the third shell in the magazine. Never had one take the gun apart and check the "correctness" of your plug. Heck, my 870 is plugged with a piece of stick from a "whoops I dont have my gun plugged" moment... it works just fine, thank you... and Ive left it there for years. To go into your gun checking the type of plug / factory spec lol is a bit overzealous. IP: Logged |

Thanks, I've never been checked for plug so I wasn't sure. I wouldn't mind putting a more substantial plug than the factory one in but I don't know how to do it on this gun. IP: Logged |

I too have a mossberg. Removing the barrel and sliding a rod into the magazine is the only way to plug it. Regs say it must be a single rod. IP: Logged |

The factory plug on my Stoeger can be removed by just taking off the mag. cap. IP: Logged |

I own a Mossberg/Newhaven 600at and the plug is nothing more than a wooden rod that is roughly the same diameter and length as a #2 pencil. Removal of the plug is as simple as unscrewing the cap and letting it slide out. I find it ridiculous that using a pencil wouldn't be legal. The fire arms was manufactured that way, so I don't see were they could penalize someone for it. I would definitely do some research into the laws on the subject. IP: Logged |

Just because some FFWC officer "told you" doesn't mean it is correct...He gave you bad information. as long as it is one piece...and even just removing the foreend cap...that counts as disassembly. Every young FFWC officer isn't the Gospel. Read the regs...THEY are the Gospel. If I had a buck for every time I heard erronious information given out by peole who are supposed to inforce the rules.... IP: Logged |

Yeah, what he said above... I had to point out a few things in the regs to an overzealous young FWC officer one time at a WMA... the two other (older) officers just sat there and smiled... Especially his question... "so how do I know you didnt shoot these birds an hour ago?" My reply... "got a thermometer?"... IP: Logged |
