So I rescued this companion dog from the pound a while back. He was a beautiful two yr old black lab mixed with great dane. I have never taken him hunting b/c he is real nervous around guns and kinda slow (mentally). Today I decided to take a drive to lake Seminole and see if I could kill a Canvasback. No one wanted to come so I loaded 'Jackson' up and we were set up by 3:30 in some high grass.

As soon as I took my gun out he freaked and dove into the front of my gheenoe and hid under some palmetto. I gave him treats to calm him down and he did. Then, out of knowhere a bird decoys and right as I shoot, Jackson is out of the boat and on his way towards the bird. I was in such shock it took me a couple seconds to grab the camera. He worked the crippled bird until he had it (drake Redhead) in his mouth. Without missin a beat he brought it back dropped it, climbed on the boat, and sat down. As if he had been doing this his whole life. I have never worked with him, and the only ducks I know he has seen have been my dead ones. When I got him the pound told me he was from a family who had to give him up due to financial issues and he was their companion dog, so he has never hunted before I assume.

Like second nature. Here is the video

Well, my buddy sold me out this morning due to rain. I am headed back to Seminole to kill another Canvasback and test Jack's skills . That lake is loaded with em' and apparently holds Redheads too.

So Jesse, you had a pretty crappy season this year. To recap --

1) You built and used your own layout boat -- plus two more
2) You got your first Redhead
3) You got your first Canvasback
4) You got your first band
5) You found out your dog is a natural
6) You shot a pile of dux in Texas

Must suck to be you.

Congrats on all the above.

I had a great season. Especially considering last year I killed under 20 ducks. I would never have shot that Redhead at HM had it not been for your info. Thanks for all your help this year, can't wait till next year.

Yeah, sucky season all right there partner.

TRY PNEUMONIA and listening to your friends either (A) gloat or (B) bemoan their bad luck.

Everytime I heard a complaint, all I could think of was..

"At least you were out there"

:P But, God willing, in just a few months, the sun will rise again on another opening day... and hopefully Ill be there to enjoy it..good luck or bad (but hopefully real good)

Till then Ill run the turkey woods and catch some bream with my little girl. Lifes not bad, eh?

With your good fortune wouldn't surprise me if prior to next years hunting season you show up acknowledging you found an "UN" rusty beaver huntin partner to tag along w/ you. Make it happen
