Hey guys JCP and I just started building a hybrid layout boat. Probably wont get to use it this season, but I cant wait for it to be done. Ive already named it the Coot Commander. Im going to post pictures along the way. Thanks to Jesse (rustybeaver) for the idea. [This message has been edited by nimatime (edited 01-25-2010).] IP: Logged |

You will love it. I can do anything with mine. I have the square nosed and it even paddles fairly well. I plan to do some fishing with it in the offseason on small freshwater places. And yes mine is a RustyBeaver original that another buddy customized after Jesse built. Call me lazy but my craftmanship is lacking. IP: Logged |

If its one of the McCormick Hybrids I hear that the square/pram nose is more roomy.. also give you more room if you are adding flotation. Blindhog did you use poly or epoxy resin? How is it holding up? IP: Logged |

Heres tonights work, we put the transom in place, and put the sides in...but now we are having problems bending the bow to a point. We n"rigged it with 200 pound mono and a crimp to hold the two sides close together, and then layed paper towels over the sides and soaked them so that hopefully tommorow they will bend better. Mine has a squared front end to make it not so tight and have a little more leg room. The construction part of these boats are not only fun, but very inexpensive. But the hard and expensive part is the fiberglass. If you're like me, and never worked with fiberglass before, it's probably going to be a little difficult but manageable. I used fiberglass mats and poly resin with hardener. My boat is completely fiberglassed except for the top back half. I need to get it done, but just haven't got around to it. Fun project though. here is the pointy and pram style. Both are pretty stable and paddle well. the pointy can maneuver better. I used epoxy resin and glass for the transom and bow to inc. durability. I have built 3 and never used flotation. [This message has been edited by rustybeaver (edited 01-26-2010).] IP: Logged |

Hey jesse do you have any pictures of the bow before you put the top on. I am just trying to figure out how you brought the two sides together at the bow to make the point. Im assuming we need to put a 6 inch 1x4 on the deck in the middle where the two meet to have something for the two ends of the bow sides to meet at and screw into. Im trying to figure out how you did it. Also, you didnt use floatation for the bow and stern? I bought the floatation stuff, but I dont see there being room in the bow for me to put that much in, specially if I want leg room. Finally, your transom looks like it has something extra? I was thinking of putting a piece of starboard for the trolling motor to mount on to, what do you think? Quackhead- yours looks awesome! I noticed you had all the 1x2s on the sides, did you have the 1x2s run all the way up to the bow to help with the bend on the sides? IP: Logged |

nima - yea i used the 1x2 all the way to the bow of the boat. I made em' smaller and smaller towards the bow which made it real easy to screw in the sides. Then, I took some wood putty and just filled in the crevaces and rounded everything off. Oh, and if you're having trouble bending the sides together, spray em' down real good with a waterhose. well the flotation foam doesn't do a darn thing until you sink it. that's what the foam is for, because if your boat fills with water the hull itself will not be displacing water and creating an upward buoyant force. the foam has air trapped inside of it so if you fill the boat with water it still has some water being displaced by something less dense (the air inside a foam cell). Im helping nima with the boat on our porch, i glassed boats for about 3 years for a job so that should be the easy part. do you drag yours with gear in it? i thought about gettin some airboat bottom paint if i make one for me, it cause you wouldnt need much. If you go to the refuge forums and look under the boat forum subpage do a search for "hbrid". Youll find the designer (Richard Mccormick) email. If you email him he will send you a copy. IP: Logged |
